About EMDR Therapy

EMDR Therapy is a relatively new but very useful type of therapy. It has been designed to work particularly with people who have experienced trauma but is very useful in working with other types of issues too.

This might include:

  • Phobias
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood

Sometimes the difficult events in our life shape us in the way we see ourselves and the world. Traumatic events take place not only in the mind, such as the things you remember, but also in our body.  At the time you experienced a trauma your body would have ‘felt’ things too. These feelings can cause you to continue to experience feelings of trauma.  

These sensations can come to be felt repeatedly and affect the way we can function in the world.  In a sense our bodies ‘respond’ as if in a traumatic event.  The problem is this response  happens at other times which don’t need that type of response.  The trauma feeling lives within our bodies and can get in the way of our day to day lives.

The evidence shows us that EMDR therapy can help us lower the intensity of the emotional charge that the past has over us.
